Project Description:

The Level Crossing Removal Project at Maidstone Street, Altona aims to eliminate a critical congestion point on the Werribee Line, improving safety and creating better connections in this industrial area. By building a road bridge over the existing rail line, the project preserves important utilities while providing optimal connectivity for the surrounding industrial precinct.

The removal of the Maidstone Street level crossing will significantly reduce congestion for the 14,400 vehicles that use this crossing daily, where boom gates are currently down for more than 20% of the morning peak. This upgrade is particularly crucial in preparation for the Metro Tunnel opening in 2025, which will increase train frequency on the Werribee Line.

The new road bridge design will deliver reduced travel times and improved safety outcomes for both local residents and industrial businesses operating in the area. This crossing forms part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to make the Werribee Line boom gate free by 2030.

The Maidstone Street level crossing removal is being delivered by the Metropolitan Roads Program Alliance as part of the broader Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), which will remove 110 level crossings across metropolitan Melbourne. This comprehensive program also includes additional rail network upgrades such as new train stations, track duplications, and train stabling yards, all overseen by the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority (VIDA).

Our Role:

Construction Sciences has been awarded the soil testing contract for the Maidstone Street Level Crossing Removal Project. The Melbourne Laboratory is responsible for testing of soil used in constructing the new road bridge and associated infrastructure, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards throughout the construction process.
