Project Description:
Prominent Hill Operations Expansion (PHOX) project is a major upgrade to the existing Prominent Hill mine, located approximately 650 kilometres north-west of Adelaide and 130 kilometres south-east of Coober Pedy in South Australia. The project involves the establishment of a 1,331 metre deep shaft and the construction of a 6.5 Mtpa materials handling system to support the transition from truck haulage to shaft ore hoisting.
The development includes underground truck loading chutes, a primary underground crushing station, skip loading station, production hoisting system, and extensive surface handling infrastructure. Above ground, additional works include the construction of civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, and instrumentation infrastructure associated with the winder and surface stockpiles.
The PHOX project will expand production capacity at Prominent Hill and is an important part of the mine’s long-term development strategy. The project is also noted for its engagement with local Aboriginal communities, including the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara (AMY) people, and has contributed to local employment and business development opportunities through partnerships and joint ventures.
