South32 Worsley Mine Development

Client: South32 Worsley Alumina

Location: Worsley, Southwest Western Australia

Services: Material and Soil Testing

Construction Sciences Units:
Worsley Annex Laboratory, Western
Australia

Project Description:

The Worsley Mine Development project is an essential expansion of South32’s integrated bauxite mining and alumina refining operation in the South West of Western Australia.

Located near the town of Boddington, the project provides access to new reserves and resources to sustain production at the Worsley Alumina refinery, one of the largest in the world. Bauxite is mined and transported over 50 kilometres by an overland conveyor to the refinery, where it is processed into alumina powder through the four-stage Bayer process. The alumina is then transported by rail to the Bunbury Port for export to aluminium smelters worldwide.

This development phase will maintain employment for the existing workforce, create new jobs during construction, and continue to deliver economic benefits to local communities.

Our Role:

Construction Sciences has been engaged for a third consecutive package at the Worsley Alumina Refinery in Collie, Western Australia, to support quality assurance through an on-site Annex Laboratory that conducts soil and material testing. Our team provided testing services to ensure the proper classification and compaction of soils critical for the construction of waste storage ponds.
